6.00 AM

Wake up and start my day by lifting weights for about an hour. I had my weights relocated with me when I first moved to Canberra from Perth for the graduate program.

7.00 AM

Get myself ready for work including packing my bag for the day, eating breakfast, showering and getting myself ready for the workday.

8.30 AM

To start the day, I set up my workstation on a desk that is free in the office. I review my emails, and my daily schedule and check in with my audit team to prepare for the day ahead. I work as a financial auditor and there are eight people in my team. We are responsible for auditing two medium-sized government departments. I meet one of my colleagues and we go for a quick coffee run in preparation for the day.

9.00 AM

The work we do in financial audit varies and no two days are the same. For today, there is some analytic work that I started yesterday and should be able to complete it within an hour before an important team meeting that I have later today.

10.00 AM

During this time, we had a team meeting about the work papers that will outline what work we need to complete throughout the audit and the methods we will use to achieve our goals. There was much discussion about the actions we will take and what would be the best method to achieve the desired results.

11.30 AM

After the meeting, I made the required changes to some work papers based on what we discussed. I wanted to make necessary changes when the information was fresh in my head, and I was glad I could tick off the work papers.

12.30 PM

After completing that work, it is time for lunch. In the lunchroom, I sit with the graduates and check how their day has been. We have a chat as I eat my sandwich.

1.00 PM

After lunch, I have some more work to complete related to one of the department’s processes involving purchases and payables. I will be required to read and understand the department's processes and policies for how they recognise and process invoices within the department. There will also be documentation provided by the entity that I will use as evidence to support my findings on the current process for purchases and payables.

3.30 PM

We have our weekly team meeting where the team discusses the progress on the two audits and the meeting is in two parts, separated by audit. During this meeting each team member discusses the work completed during the week, the work remaining and any challenges presented during the week.  This is an opportunity to seek team assistance or input. After the team meeting, I finish my day of work and drive home.

5.00 PM

After I arrive home, I relax for a short time and then go for walk along the river that is near my place. Walking along the river is good for exercise and a good way to wind down after work. During the summer and autumn in Canberra, there are daylight savings, and it does not start getting dark until around 8.00 pm so you can take advantage of the extra daylight after work.

6.30 PM

After going for my walk, I prepare and eat dinner.

7.00 PM

After dinner, I can relax, do any work I need to do around my apartment and then go to bed at around 10.00 pm.
