Working in collaboration with a wide range of people with diverse backgrounds has helped me gain a better understanding of where I can see my career going.

What's your job about?

The Pricing & Estimation (P&E) team perform a variety of roles that assist in the bid process through interaction from a variety of internal and external stakeholders.

My role involves formulating pricing estimates based on engineering documents, engaging internal teams for approval and constructing proposals. The size and content of each tender are different, so no two days are ever the same!

My role necessitates me to be both detail-orientated and sociable. Whilst my engineering and maths degree was quite technical, it was the problem-solving and team-based skills that I have found most valuable. I often collaborate with on-site technicians, solution architects, legal professionals, HR consultants and finance gurus to find and present the best solution to Honeywell customers.

What's your background?

I grew up in Brisbane. I went to the same school for 13 years, then the same university for the following 5, all while living in the same house. 4 days after graduating from university, I packed up my life into my car and drove to Sydney ready to start the next chapter of my life at Honeywell.

Throughout school and university, I tried to involve myself in as many extracurricular activities as I could. Being willing to take on new challenges has made the transition to full-time work easier, having the ability to juggle multiple tasks whilst maintaining an enjoyable home life is very important.

I began interviewing for my current position around June 2022, 6 months before my graduation. The process itself was very engaging, the mix of group assessment centres and induvial interviews helped me understand both the role and the company. By July I received an offer for my current role. Being able to complete my final semester of university with the peace of mind of post-graduation employment definitely helped ease the stress.

Could someone with a different background do your job?

Yes! Someone with a different background from me could definitely do my job. Having a capacity for responsible and a growth mindset is more important than the specific technical background that a candidate might have. Sales are all about connecting with the customer to provide them with value, so as long as you are committed to improving your customer’s experience, you are well on your way.

What's the coolest thing about your job?

My favourite thing about my job is the way it allows me to delve deep into a big project and become immersed in a variety of different aspects. Working in collaboration with a wide range of people with diverse backgrounds has helped me gain a better understanding of where I can see my career going. Coming from an engineering background, the ability to balance technical knowledge and problem-solving in different circumstances makes me excited about coming to work every day.

What are the limitations of your job?

My job definitely requires a high degree of attention to detail. Without focus, it can be difficult to pick up on small aspects of a project that may be crucial to delivering it on time. Additionally, whilst the flexible working arrangements are great, it goes both ways. Some days, long hours are required in order to complete tasks within strict deadlines. You may have to revise the same problem 20 times in order to make sure the solution we are presenting to the customer is complete, compliant and coherent.

3 pieces of advice for yourself when you were a student...

  • Focus on the process rather than the end result. Whilst some of the content learnt throughout university may not be directly applicable to my day-to-day work, it is the way that work is completed on time and to a high standard that is invaluable.
  • Embrace balance. Having something consume 100% of your time can become extremely tedious, even if you enjoyed it to begin with. It is important to take breaks and enjoy time away from work in order to enhance productivity.
  • Try and take something out of all experiences. Even if a project, might seem boring try and work out a way to learn something.
