Tayla Bussian

I work as a manufacturing engineer within Boeing which involves a range of tasks and responsibilities from data analysis, high-level calculations, planning and document writing for build plans, warehouse production layout and design and collaboration with suppliers and stakeholders which is conducted through a variety of Microsoft and engineering design platforms such as Microsoft Visio, 3Dx Experience and Catia.

5.00 am

The alarm clock goes off and it’s time to wake up for another productive day. I’m an early bird and prefer getting up early and getting things completed before a busy day of work. I feed my dogs, give them a cuddle goodbye before gathering my bags and making my way to the gym.

5.30 am

I arrive at the gym and begin my workout while listening to a podcast or some uplifting music to power me through my session. I believe by working out early sets me for the day and gives me the motivation, focus and discipline I need. After getting through the hardest part of my morning, I get myself ready for the day, collect my belongings and make a small commute to the Boeing office.

Office

7.00 am

Enjoying the work flexibility, I get into the office early and it’s nice and quiet, most people like to arrive between 8 am-9 am. I sit down at my desk and enjoy some breakfast while sorting through some emails from the team and stakeholders and preparing for a full day of activities. As an engineer, I work part of a large team working on the new ATS Project made up of many disciplines and skillsets on a major project and usually have multiple tasks and responsibilities running at a single time with different delivery dates and requirements. These are prioritized through an organised schedule and planned out accordingly to ensure dates and high standards of work are met.

Meeting

8.00 am

Every week our team comes together virtually for a team meeting to collaborate and discuss current tasks that are being worked, schedule requirements, project opportunities and news and any help that may be needed. This is a good opportunity for the team to solve issues, listen and respond constructively as well has bond through a good laugh. Being located across different sites and facilities in Australia it’s exciting to hear what the team has achieved and how the project is progressing.

Break Room

9.30 am

After an eventful morning, I like to enjoy a delicious coffee provided in the Boeing break room facility which gives me the opportunity to catch up with members of the team and a small break to relax and stretch my legs.

10.00 am

Being a Mechanical Engineer I have the ability and flexibility to work within many areas of the project due to the range my degree provides.

Boeing takes their time with graduates to ensure they are paired up with a manager and mentor to ensure they are introduced into the company with all the tools and information needed. This has helped me develop my professional and engineering skills and enable me to create a well diverse network nationally and globally. I have fortunately had the privilege of travelling and working on the aircraft at different sites across Australia giving me first-person experience and a greater understanding of how the project flows and how the aircraft is produced to assist me within my role.

12.00 pm

Working in the city there are a variety of great local cafes and natural park areas to enjoy lunch and spending time with colleagues away from work. I love sitting in a small garden area close to the office and eating my lunch and enjoying the fresh air. On some occasions, the team will organise a group lunch which is a great opportunity to meet new members and get to know one another over some tasty food.

Break room 2

1.00 pm

After a well-rejuvenated lunch break, I set up back at my desk and get ready for some afternoon meetings. These meetings are usually task-specific with smaller groups within the project collaborating on specific issues and requirements. These meetings are great for gaining a deeper understanding of the task and playing a major role in solving specific issues and completing tasks as an individual and as part of a team about the aircraft.

2.00 pm

Once the meetings are complete I grab a coffee for a quick afternoon pick-me-up and take the time to research and work through any notes and/or requirements discussed throughout the day for the projects.

4.00 pm

Time to finish up, after a productive day in the office, I make the 30min commute home via train, usually spending this time winding down and enjoying some relaxing music. When I get home, I greet my family and relax on the couch while enjoying an afternoon snack and sharing my day’s events with my partner.

5.00 pm

My afternoons usually consist of me spending quality time with my partner and dogs. Living near some natural reserve we take a nice walk through some trails and allow the dogs to get out and enjoy some well-deserved exercise.

6.00 pm

Time to relax and re-energise for tomorrow, I spend my evenings cooking dinner and meal prepping for the next day followed by some quality Netflix time. After dinner, I prepare for the next day before settling into bed around 8 pm with a cup of tea and a good book to finish off the day and head to sleep.
